Chang'an was the capital of Tang period China
(618- 907 CE). At its peak, it had a population of about one million. Measuring 9.7 by 8.6
kilometres, the plan of this large city inspired the planning of many other capital cities
in East Asia including Heijo-kyo and Heian-kyo in Japan in the 8th
century. Join us as we take a walk through this majestic city.

Enter the city

Mingde Gate
located in the southern city wall... March down the imperial
Zhuque Avenue , with its width equivalent to a modern 45-lane highway.
Visit the Buddha Hall to pray for divine protection. Seek
audience with Emperor
Gaozong at the Hanyuan Hall
in the Daming Palace. Catch a glimpse of the interior of
courtyard houses located in the various residential wards. |

The Chang'an multimedia
programme permits you to travel through the defunct Chinese city that has been digitally
reconstructed, through years of extensive research, using advance CAD systems. The
interactive programme allows you to visit numerous locations within the historical city
and to explore ancient Chinese architecture. The reconstruction, based largely on literary
documents, archaeological reports and various other sources, is one of the most accurate
attempts to have been carried out to date. |

Containing no less than 14
different animation sequences, the programme, totalling about 60 minutes, will surely
provide for an unforgettable learning experience! Each tour is accompanied by explanatory
descriptions and music interpreted from the 'Dunhuang Ancient Music', a hand-written book
of melodies from the Tang Dynasty. |

Each part of the tour is informed by succinct text providing reconstructed accounts of life within the walls of the Chinese city. A built-in-quick-access glossary provides explanations for various terms found within the text. |

The interface is extremely user-friendly and provides many functions including pause and play during animation sequences and a choice to start over or return to the main menu from any point within the programme. The voice-over can also be de-activated at the simple touch of a button. In each fly-through sequence, there are also key-plans showing the direction of view. |

| From the main menu, users can choose to visit no less than 13 unique locations within the historic city. These include official buildings such as the Linde and Hanyuan Halls, religious complexes, residential wards, architectural landmarks and commercial markets among others. Each part of the tour consists of an introductory description of the location followed by slides, digital images and a guided 'walk through'. The embedded animation sequences allow users to experience visually the spatial and formal matrix of the ancient city. |
