| |

Streets Symposium (GASS) was established in 2001.
The first and second symposium under GASS was held
on January 18-19, 2001 and July 25-26, 2002
respectively at the Department of Architecture,
National University of Singapore. The refereed
symposium provided a discussion platform for urban
researchers and professionals committed to the study
of streets and public spaces in Asian region, when
most available literature on public spaces is
currently published by European and American
sources, and there is a dire lack of resources from

Conservation
of Architectural Heritage: Appreciating the Past |
|
The
conservation of architectural heritage is a demanding and
all-encompassing process. Besides safeguarding the historic buildings
from demolition, the repair and restoration of the historic fabric are
also very critical components of this process in ensuring the full
retention of the cultural significance. We have been endowed by our
multi-racial and multi-cultural society with a rich diversity of
architectural influences. Such a heritage must be treasured for it is a
visual record of the various cultural influences we have received. In
our conservation effort, it is imperative that the intrinsic values of
the various architectural forms be understood in order to adopt the
appropriate technique in the repair of the buildings, particularly of
the elements. Most of the elements are unique to their
architectural type and possess their own traditions of constructional
methods and craftsmanship. Therefore, before any intervention, a
prerequisite must be that research on the architectural significance be
made. This should include the source of original building material used. |
