HEALING SHIMOKITAZAWA AND BELLISHIMO: PERFORMANCE ARTS DISTRICT
Dubbed as the youth culture epicentre in Tokyo, Japan, Shimokitazawa’s dense and small urban fabric is currently under threat as local planning proposals aim to clear existing land for large motorways and buildings. This thesis proposes an alternative town planning model that celebrates the existing urban fabric while staying relevant to contemporary planning concerns.
Through the introduction of a creative village that provides platforms for the development and showcase of local artist’ works and music, theatre and movie, it seeks to demonstrate the potentials of cultivating and harnessing local talents to achieve commercial viability, while maintaining the dense and small typology unique to Shimokitazawa.
