Background |
|
1. |
The total market size of Landscape Architecture
industry sector in Singapore was approximately $53m in
2004 and is forecasted to grow to $153m by 2014,
assuming a 10 year Compound Annual Growth Rate of 11.28%
(where local demand is 9.48%, while overseas demand is
forecasted at 12.95%).* |

|
|
2. |
The
Singapore Institute of Landscape Architects (SILA) estimates
that Singapore’s ratio of Landscape Architect per population
as 1:70,000 as of 2005). SILA has made a case that the
present ratio of qualified Landscape Architects within the
industry is highly inadequate and recommends that the local
industry emulate Japan’s ratio of 1:12,650 by adding
approximately 350 architects over the next 10 to 15 years.
Landscape Architecture firms have been experiencing
tremendous growth through domestic and overseas and had to
turn away numerous local and overseas opportunities due to a
lack of qualified Landscape Architects.

| |
|
|
3. |
The
landscape industry is a “sun-rise” industry with growing
employment potential. There is a growing emphasis on
integrating landscape features with buildings and townships.
However, there is a lack of qualified Landscape Architects
to lead these projects. Hence, there is a need to raise the
awareness of the potential of careers in the landscape
industry and to groom future leaders for the landscape
industry. |
| |
|
|
4. |
The
Landscape Industry Scholarship Programme - Masters of
Landscape Architecture will address the talent crunch in the
landscape architecture sector. Singapore has amassed a
world reputation as a “Garden City” and is now adopting the
vision of a “City in the Garden”, to distinguish itself from
its competitors by raising the bar in environmental planning
and landscape design. |
