PhD student Imran bin Tajuddeen was awarded Jeffrey Cook Award for the author for the best paper in IASTE Conference. 

He wrote a paper on 'Culture' and Tourism Imagery for the Malay-Indonesian Districts of Singapore. The paper is concerned with the subject of traditional dwellings and settlements in a manner that challenges traditional scholarship on the subject and engages spatial analysis from an interdisciplinary perspective.


Industrial Design student Brian Chuan Chai Law won the 2nd prize in the Electrolux Design Lab Award 2006 for his Organic Cook portable cooking unit, which uses high-efficiency radiant energy to cook without fat when frying, grilling or broiling. 

Hundreds of other design students from 37 countries around the world entered this year's competition and were challenged to seek solutions that promote healthy eating habits for the 2016 consumer.

Industrial Design student Tan Yong Kai won the top 20 iF concept award product 2007.  530 entries from 32 countries were received and only the top 20 will get an award. iF is one of the top design awards from the commercial design world and Yong Kai's winning entry will be published in the iF design year book as well.


Visiting Fellow Mr Carlos Alberto Montana Hoyos was selected as one of the 10 most influential Colombian designers and architects in 2006.

Industrial Design student Lim Sun Liang was honored with the Red-Dot: Luminary. This award is only conferred onto a single most exceptional entry from each of the three submission entrants, i.e. student, professional and company. Lian He Zao Bao's report.

Architecture alumni Lui Honfay is one of the top prize winner for the URA Marina Bay Bridge competition. His winning design will be realised on the bridge itself, the only art project which is featured. The rest of the art works will be showcased in the art park.

Architecture students Lui Honfay and Jasmine Chan won First Prize in the open category of this year's Singapore Gifts and Promotional Product Design Awards (GAPP).

One group of Industrial Design students won the Bronze prize of the 2006 Liteon Awards, and another two groups of students won The Panel of Judges Special Awards. The details of the design and students' names are as follows:

Industrial Design students Gabriel Tan and Wendy Chua was awarded a Bronze prize in the Industiral Design Excellence Awards 2006 (IDEA).

The Industrial Design Excellence Awards are dedicated to fostering business and public understanding of the importance of industrial design excellence to the quality of life and the economy. Winning the IDEA is a distinction like no other that brands your design as the very best in the business, among your peers, among your clients, among consumers around the world.

Sponsored by BusinessWeek and judged independently by the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA), the contest is one of the most important of its kind. The National University of Singapore is the only winner outside the USA in the Student Category.

This work was also the winner of Electrolux Lab Award in 2005.

SARA-NY 2006

It is unprecedented that Architecture students from NUS win awards of the highest honour at the SARA Student Design Awards. Also unprecedented is the fact that five awards were won by NUS students this year. Top awardees from the SARA competitions in previous years hailed from universities such as Harvard University, Princeton University, the City College of New York, Georgia Institute of Technology and Oklahoma State University.

Information on SARA

The Society of American Registered Architects (SARA) was founded in 1956 as a professional society that includes the participation of all architects, regardless of their roles in the architectural community. SARA follows the Golden Rule and supports the concept of profitable professionalism for its members.

SARA has 11 Councils in 8 states, including the New York Council, which organised the SARA NY 2006 Design Awards.

SARA is similar to many other organizations. It caters to a special interest group - in this case, practising architects. It responds to their concerns and seeks to address issues that affect them, the environment and society as a whole.

Industrial Design students Eugene's and Yong Kai's winning iF Concept Award 2006 design was featured on the 21st May issue of Sunday Time's Lifestyle section.

Architecture student Lui Honfay was selected as winner for the international CEBI Design Competition.  He won the 1st prize for the leg category which is a competition to design home fittings: door handle, legs, hook and handle button.

3rd Prize Winner: ‘The Urban Cinema’
Submitted by Archiland Consultant International, with Mr Low Boon Liang.

Three Industrial Design students and one Industrial Design alumni entries were selected as Excellent Works in the International Design Competition Osaka 2005. International Design Competition Osaka is one of the most prestigious design awards globally. KITA-san was the previous chairman of this competition.

The theme of this competition was " E N E R G Y ". A total of 889 entries from up-coming young designers and planners of 44 countries and regions around the world were received. Due to rigorous examination by experts, 67 excellent works were selected with the subject of the business matchmaking.

Industrial Design students Chin Yit Sheng, Eugene and Tan Yong Kai bag iF Concept Award Material 2006. A prestigious trademark for outstanding design, an iF award is a symbol of commitment to innovation and a willingness to face the competition. This international competition had 639 entries from over 33 nations this year and only 14 entries has been honored the iF Award.

The "iF Design Award" is one of four most prestigious annually design awards ( iF Award
Red Dot AwardG-Mark Awardand IDEA) recognized by the industries worldwide. It is often referred to as the "Design Oscars" by industries worldwide. Since its inauguration in 1953, the iF Design Award has existed as an enduring and prestigious trademark for outstanding design. Companies and design studios deploy the iF seal in their communication campaigns as a visible symbol of product and service quality. And for buyers of design-oriented products, the iF seal serves as a decision-making tool in the marketplace.

iF Concept Award material offers university students from around the world a chance to gain public exposure. It is particularly conducive to young designers' accumulating important new experience in developing materials, material applications and product ideas to stay in touch with the latest developments in society and the economy.

4 of our final year Industrial Design students's works have been selected as Top 20 Overall Entries for the 2005 International Photoreal Furniture Design Competition!

This competition is all about designers creating cutting edge computer assisted (or 'photoreal') furniture designs; and their reflection in the tangible world may be evident if these products make it to market. The 4 students are :

Lin Weizheng, Cici Chen, Victor Ong and Chin Yit Sheng, Eugene.

Architecture student Loo Lie Chuan won the Merit Award for Design Competition in China. This is the first architectural design competition for university students in China organised by Gemdale in the later part of 2005, one of the major real estate developer in China. There was a total of 113 entries from 21 universities, including all the Chinese universities famous for their school of architecture such as Tsinghua University, Tongji University, South East University, Chongqing University, Zhejiang University, Tienjing University, Haerbin Technological University etc.

A total of ten awards are given out, 1 gold award, 2 silver awards, 3 bronze awards and 4 merit awards. Lie Chuan won this award while he was on Student Exchange Programme together with two students from Tsinghua University.
