Title of Thesis

:

Constituting and re-constructing the vernacular heritage of maritime emporia in the Nusantara: Historic adaptation and contemporary accentuation.

Abstract

:

‘Vernacular’ practices, while perpetuating specific traditions, simultaneously reflect the movement of people and ideas and their ‘adaptations’ to new circumstances and opportunities. This dialectic becomes particularly pertinent in the heterogeneous milieu of maritime emporia. This study outlines the ports of Nusantara – Austronesian Southeast Asia – as a field for the comparative typological analysis of historic vernacular urban artefacts. Their regional-native ‘lingua franca’ shared forms and histories of expunctions and displacements are highlighted, necessitating a reconsideration of the location of architectural history and urban memory.

This body of evidence is then juxtaposed against various generic-nostalgic ‘accentuations’, constituted and reconstructed in both written and built forms, that presumptively essentialise the native vernacular as rustic and static. The closed discourses of interpretation behind these stereotypical representations, interventions and reinventions are critiqued. Finally, historic architectural worth, authoritative valuation and the price of official restoration practices are distinguished in order to reappraise heritage intervention strategies.

Under the recently established open-exam system, academic staff as well as research students are welcome to attend the Ph.D. oral defence.

The candidate will give a 45-minute presentation, followed by a time of Q&A and subsequently, where necessary, a closed-door session involving only the exam panel will take place. For the open session, please note the following guidelines.

1. The exam panel members can ask specific questions on the thesis as well as general questions to test the fundamentals and knowledge relevant to the subject.

2. The candidate's supervisor(s) can be present as observer(s) without Q&A right.

3. All other participants can ask questions pertaining to the candidate's presentation during the Q&A session.

4. Besides time control and moderating the exam process, the Chair of the exam panel has the right to intervene or overrule if, in his/her judgment, a question raised is inappropriate, irrelevant or inconsequential to the examination.

We look forward to your participation.
