University Scholars Programme

The University Scholars Programme [USP] is a premier undergraduate programme that selects highly talented students from Faculties across NUS. Its unique curriculum and learning environment stretch students’ intellectual, leadership and personal capacities, and foster a vibrant community of scholars that strives to break new ground in multidisciplinary insights and global perspectives. For more specific information, please visit the NUS USP website.

USP students are expected to fulfill the following requirements:

I. Eight First Tier Modules

First-tier modules are a structured collection of multidisciplinary modules in which students integrate diverse bodies of knowledge and evaluate critically different intellectual methodologies. There are three main Domains and thirteen Areas of study. These modules can be read anytime over four years (preferably within the first three years, but not all within the first year). These modules are equivalent to level 2000 modules, and are run by the USP Office.

Please refer to USP website for details on First-Tier Module Domain distribution requirements

Wherever possible, the first tier modules will replace the University Level Requirements within the B.A (Architecture) programme.

B.A (Industrial Design) students are expected to read one (1) Writing and Critical Thinking module and one (1) Singapore Studies themed USP module.

Students will be exempted from HR3003 Management & Human Relations if they take and pass any one of the following:
- UHB2201 Human Relations OR
- UHB2204 Leadership OR
- UHB2205 Unraveling Riddles of Culture

Writing and Critical Thinking module replaces AR5011 Research Methodology for students in the Design track or Architectural Studies track.

II. Advanced Modules

Student must pass four (4) Advanced Modules worth 16 MCs.

The following deliverables are set out for Architecture students in fulfillment of the USP Advanced Modules Requirement.

2004/05 – 2006/07 Cohorts:

USP students are required to conduct Independent research and design, leading to a public exhibition.

The exhibition will ride-on to AR4101 Design 7 (8MCs) and AR4102 Design 8 (8MCs), in satisfying the 16MCs USP Advanced curriculum requirements.

2007/08 Cohort onwards:

Students will have to write extended independent research papers linked to the following architecture modules:

- AR3222 History and Theory of Western Architecture (4MCs)

- AR3323 Architectural Construction 3 (4MCs)

- AR4102 Design 8/AR4104  (8MCs)

Instead of doing an additional assignment for the ride-on modules, the students would be asked to undertake a more complex assignment that would entail extended critical analysis compared to the usual assignment.
